MY DEAD FRIEND ZOE is a dark comedy-drama that follows the journey of Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green), a U.S. Army veteran in Afghanistan who finds herself at odds with her family thanks to the presence of Zoe (Natalie Morales), her deceased best friend from the Army. Despite the persistence of her veteran group counselor (Morgan Freeman), the tough love of her mother (Gloria Reuben), and the frivolity of unexpected love, Merit’s cozy and dysfunctional friendship with Zoe keeps the duo isolated from the world. Until Merit’s estranged grandfather (Ed Harris), hiding out in the family’s ancestral lake house, loses his bearings and needs the one thing he’s been denied: help. At its core, it’s a buddy movie about a complicated friendship, a divided family, and the complex ways we deal with grief.
