As ‘The Apprentice’; (2024 release; 120in) opens, it’s the early 1970s and a young Donald Trump is spotted at a diner by strategist and fixer Roy Cohn. For reasons that are unclear and never really explained, Cohn decides to take Trump under his wing, with Trump becoming his “apprentice.” At this point, we’re less than 10 minutes into the movie. A few comments: This is the latest from Iranian director Ali Abbasi.

It brings to the big screen a period of Trump’s life that covers about 15 (1972-1987). If you’ve followed politics in this country for the past 9 years, since Trump descended the escalators of Trump Tower to announce his candidacy for president, nothing in the film comes as much of a surprise because it simply (re)confirms what what we know about Trump. The magic is that it is brought in as if you were a fly on the wall. Not enough can be said about the amazing performance of Sebastien Stan, whose authenticity will amaze you.
Kudos also to the filmmakers for recreating New York in the 1907s and 80s
The rest of the cast is also great, including Jeremy Strong (as Cohn) and Bulgarian actress Maria Bulkova (as Ivana). It won’t surprise you when I mention that the film is reviled by Trump and MAGA extremists (without having seen the film of course) and Trump’s lawyers have tried everything they were able to stop the film from being released in the US, to no avail. "The Apprentice" premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to immediate success. The movie is currently rated 77% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and that seems about right to me.
The movie opened in US theaters this weekend and I couldn’t wait to see it
At the Saturday matinee where I saw this at the arthouse theater here in Cincinnati, there was a nice turnout of about 25-30 people. If you’re interested in knowing what Trump was like 40-50 years ago, I’d easily suggest you check this out and draw your own conclusion..
